Origin of the Rottweiler

The Rottweiler originated in Germany and has a history dating back to the Roman Empire. Roman soldiers used strong mastiff-type dogs to drive cattle and protect camps. Over time, these dogs were developed in the German town of Rottweil, which is how the breed got its name.
