Our Real Experience with Rabbits
![]() |
| Rabbits are calm, soft, and friendly animals that quickly become part of the family when treated with love and care. |
We have kept rabbits at home, and also our relatives in the village have raised many rabbits over the years. From our personal experience, rabbits are one of the most interesting and peaceful pets, but at the same time, they require more care than people usually expect.
At first, when we brought rabbits home, we placed them on normal ground thinking they would stay in one place. But after a few days, we noticed something important—they started digging holes and trying to go underneath surfaces. This is completely natural behavior for rabbits because in the wild they live in burrows and tunnels. So they always try to create a safe underground-like space.
We also noticed that rabbits are very sensitive to environment changes. If the area is too hot, too noisy, or not clean, they become stressed easily. At the same time, when they feel safe and comfortable, they become very playful and active.
Children especially love rabbits because they are soft, quiet, and gentle. Kids enjoy holding them and watching them hop around. However, supervision is important because rabbits are delicate animals and can get injured easily if handled roughly.
From daily experience, we learned that rabbits are not “low maintenance pets.” They may look easy to keep, but they actually need consistent cleaning, proper feeding, and a safe living environment.
Types of Rabbits

| From Dutch to Angora and Lionhead, each rabbit breed has its own unique look, personality, and care needs. |
There are many rabbit breeds around the world, and each has its own personality, size, and care needs. Some are small and fluffy, while others grow larger and need more space.
Common Breeds
Dutch Rabbit
Dutch rabbits are small, friendly, and easy to handle. They are one of the most popular pet rabbits because of their calm nature and attractive color patterns.
Angora Rabbit
Angora rabbits are known for their long and soft fur. Their wool is very thick and beautiful, but it also requires regular grooming. Without brushing, their fur can become tangled and messy.
Lionhead Rabbit
Lionhead rabbits have a unique fluffy mane around their head, making them look very cute. They are playful and energetic but also enjoy attention from their owners.
New Zealand Rabbit
These rabbits are larger in size and are often used in farming in some countries. They grow fast and need more food and space compared to smaller breeds.
Around the world, countries like the UK, USA, Germany, and other parts of Europe are well known for rabbit breeding and pet care systems. They also have proper guidelines for rabbit welfare.
Behavior & Daily Care
![]() |
| Rabbits naturally dig and create burrows, which is an important instinct for their safety and comfort. |
Rabbits have very interesting behavior patterns. They are gentle animals, but they are also quite active and intelligent.
Rabbits are:
Quiet and gentle by nature
More active during early morning and night
Very clean animals when kept in a proper environment
Sensitive to noise and sudden movement
One of the most important things we learned is that rabbits need daily cleaning. We clean their area every single day. If cleaning is ignored, the smell builds up quickly and hygiene becomes a serious problem. Dirty surroundings can also lead to diseases in rabbits.
Rabbits also enjoy having space to move. If they are kept in a very small cage all the time, they may become stressed or inactive. Allowing them to move safely in a controlled area helps them stay healthy and happy.
They also like chewing things. This is a natural habit because their teeth grow continuously. So they need safe chewing items like wood sticks or hay.
Food & Diet
Proper diet is one of the most important parts of rabbit care. A balanced diet keeps them active, healthy, and prevents digestive problems.
What We Feed
Fresh grass
Grass is a natural food for rabbits. It helps their digestion and keeps their system healthy.
Carrots
Carrots are a favorite food for rabbits, but they should be given in moderation because too much sugar is not good for them.
Hay (Very Important)
Hay is the most essential part of a rabbit’s diet. It helps in digestion and keeps their teeth healthy. Without hay, rabbits can develop serious health issues.
Fresh water
Clean and fresh water must always be available. Rabbits drink regularly, especially in hot weather.
Sometimes rabbits can also eat small amounts of leafy vegetables, but it should always be introduced carefully. Sudden diet changes can upset their stomach.
Breeding & Growth
Rabbits are known for their fast reproduction rate. This is one of the most important things every owner should understand before keeping them.
A female rabbit can give birth to:
4 to 12 babies at once
Sometimes even more depending on breed and health
The pregnancy period is very short, around 30 days only. Because of this, rabbit populations can grow very quickly if not managed properly.
This is why space and planning are very important. If rabbits are not separated or managed carefully, overcrowding can become a serious issue. Proper care includes knowing when and how to control breeding responsibly.
Baby rabbits grow very fast. Within a few weeks, they start eating solid food and become active. They are very delicate in the early stage, so they need warmth and protection.
Housing & Safety
A proper living environment is very important for rabbits. Many people make the mistake of keeping rabbits on soil or open ground, but this can cause problems.
Best practices for housing include:
Use proper flooring (avoid direct soil)
Keep the area dry and clean
Provide shade to protect from heat
Ensure good ventilation
Protect them from predators like cats or dogs
In hot countries, temperature control is very important. Rabbits can easily suffer from heat stress, so they should always have a cool and shaded area.
Also, their living space should be safe and escape-proof. Rabbits are quick and can run or dig if they feel unsafe.
Emotional Bond
One of the most beautiful things about rabbits is the emotional bond they create with humans.
Kids especially love rabbits because they are soft, quiet, and playful. They enjoy feeding them and watching them hop around the house or garden. Rabbits also bring a peaceful feeling to the home environment.
Even guests often enjoy seeing rabbits because they create a calm and joyful atmosphere. Watching them move gently or sit quietly can be very relaxing.
Over time, rabbits also recognize their owners. They may come closer when they hear familiar voices or when they are called. This creates a special connection between humans and pets.
However, it is important to remember that rabbits are sensitive animals. They need gentle handling, patience, and consistent care. When treated well, they become very affectionate and trusting companions.
Final Thought
Rabbits are not just cute animals—they are living beings that require responsibility, attention, and proper care. With the right environment, food, and love, they can become wonderful pets that bring joy, peace, and happiness to any home.
